September Is National Preparedness Month

8/24/2020 (Permalink)

graphic for 2020 National Preparedness Month with text "Disasters don't wait. Make your plans today." Disasters Don't Wait. Make Your Plan Today.

Glenview, IL Aug 24, 2020 - Each year, the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) designates September as National Preparedness Month to promote the importance of family and community disaster planning. This year's theme, "Disasters Don't Wait. Make Your Plan Today.", resonates strongly as local communities and communities around the world battle the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. For disaster mitigation specialists like Saul Perez of SERVPRO of Glenview, the scope and impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on all aspects of everyday life, health, and well-being have magnified the importance of SERVPRO's ongoing message to the communities it serves: When disaster strikes, preparedness is the best defense.

"Before COVID-19 exploded into a global crisis, 'disaster preparedness' for the everyday home or business owner was largely dictated by the hazards unique to their location or business," said Perez. "For some, that meant preparing for hurricanes and water damage; for others, tornadoes, flooding, wind damage, or even wildfires. But COVID-19 taught us that everyone - individuals and business owners alike - needs to be prepared for a national emergency that may disrupt food and medical supplies, transportation systems, schools, businesses, and every single aspect of everyday life that we take for granted. We've learned that, no matter where you live or work, in addition to your 'disaster' preparation, making certain that you have a stock of some basic items on hand can make a huge difference if a national or global event suddenly disrupts - or even stops - everyday life."

Perez emphasizes that everyone still needs to have a disaster preparedness plan in place. FEMA provides easy-to-use disaster planning guidelines at www.ready.gov, and home and business owners both can take advantage of free tools like the SERVPRO READY app at https://ready.SERVPRO.com/home/mobileapp. The app stores essential contact and property information electronically where it can be accessed with a mobile device in seconds if disaster strikes. Local business owners can take an additional preparedness step by designating SERVPRO of Glenview as their disaster mitigation and restoration provider. SERVPRO professionals will conduct a no-cost assessment of the facility and assist the owner in completing a comprehensive Emergency READY Profile® (ERP) to be stored in the READY app.

But, Perez reminds us, COVID-19 has taught us we need to rethink and add to our disaster preparedness toolkits. "We are all still struggling with a 'disaster' that has disrupted not only our lives and our jobs, but our entire community, our society, and the supply chain that we depend on."

While in retrospect, the shortages of some of these items have become the stuff of urban legend, Perez says it's a good idea to stockpile a supply of items for which there are no easy substitutes. "Toilet paper; yeast and flour for breadmaking; detergents; canned foods, fruits, and vegetables; pet foods and cat litter; fresh dairy items; diapers; and a host of other items were in short supply for weeks at the beginning of the crisis," said Perez. "Think back on those early weeks and keep a supply of the things that you just don't want to do without - along with some shelf-stable dairy items, dried beans, and frozen meals. Use them before they expire but be sure to replace them."

The disaster remediation specialists at SERVPRO of Glenview extend their sincere sympathy to those who have lost loved ones or who have been otherwise affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. For Glenview and Northbrook area commercial and residential customers, SERVPRO of Glenview continues to specialize in disaster restoration, cleanup, and repair services, helping to remediate damage, making it "Like it never even happened." On this day of thanks, the team at SERVPRO® of Glenview would like to wish our customers, clients, community members, and vendors a very Happy Thanksgiving!

As we take a moment to contemplate all we are thankful for, we count our blessings.

SERVPRO® of Glenview has been operating under new owner, Jeff Thompson, since October 2017. We are thankful for the loyal members of our team: Production Manager, Saul Perez; Office Manager, Suzie Koivun; and Production Technician, Tony Hernandez. We are each blessed with a wonderful family and we are grateful that they understand that at times our jobs with SERVPRO® call us away from our time with them.

We are pleased to work with the Glenview Chamber of Commerce, with whom we have the opportunity to support the town throughout the year during many local events.

We are grateful for our customers who call on us, depend on us, and trust us to provide them with cleanup and restoration services following fire, smoke, or water damage at their home or residence. We know the situation is stressful and aggravating and we appreciate that our customers count on us to get the job done.

SERVPRO of Glenview? wishes everyone a Happy Halloween!

To all our boos and ghouls - stay safe, keep warm, and have fun!

Show us your costumes by sharing a photo on our facebook page!

Here are a few reminders on Halloween night safety:

- Glenview community trick-or-treat hours are 3:00pm til 7:00pm

- Drivers: Please use extreme caution when driving down neighborhood side streets! Young children are excited and may run ahead of their parents or guardians; that means they might run into the street without looking for cars. Drive safely!

- Trick-or-treaters: Make yourself visible to others, including drivers, by carrying a lit flashlight, wearing a glow stick, or dressing in light-colored costumes.

- Safety in numbers: Traveling in a group makes you more visible to drivers. It's also more fun to trick-or-treat with friends!

- Moms and dads: As always, check the candy and treats for evidence of tampering. Toss any opened or unwrapped candy. And don't forget to collect your "Awesome Parenting" tax by snagging some of your favorite candies before approving the treats fit for consumption by your little monsters!

- No matter how creepy or spooky your costume, you don't want your teeth to be gross and ugly once Halloween is over! After you eat your fill of Halloween candy, don't forget to brush your teeth before going to bed!
